5 Tips to Get Your Home Ready for Spring with Bianco Renovations

From spring cleaning to landscaping, make this spring a great time to improve your home and surroundings. Winter can be tough on a lot of homes, and extra precipitation, snow, and ice can all damage the exterior. Give your interior the attention with regular maintenance it needs to help combat this damage. Make sure you get it done right, and take a look at this spring home maintenance checklist first.

1. Walk Around and Inspect

Before you start making a list of things to tackle this year, take the time to walk around the perimeter of your home and inspect it. Winter can be hard on your home, causing wear and tear that can lead to bigger issues down the road.

Check your foundation for cracks and the surrounding landscaping for excessively soggy ground. Inspect your siding for holes and for missing caulk around doors and windows. Look up at your roof to check for missing, cracked, curling, or broken roof shingles. Make sure your gutters aren’t clogged or overflowing.

2. Take Care of Exterior Maintenance

While you may not want to fix roofing problems, there are many exterior maintenance projects you can do yourself. Begin by clearing debris from around your home. Unclog your gutters if you can safely reach them, and replace any missing caulk around your windows and doors. Wash your outdoor furniture and inspect it to make sure it’s ready for another season of use. If you garden, start amending the soil and getting it ready for planting in a few weeks.

Consider refreshing the paint or stain on your porch or deck if it has visibly cracked, faded, or deteriorated. Give a fresh coat of paint to your front door, trim, or shutters at the same time.

3. Clean and Install Your Window Screens

Whether or not you leave your screens in the windows all winter, make sure they’re clean and ready for spring. Screens are made of mesh, which can trap dust, pet hair, and pollen that can clog them up. Remove this debris at the end of the winter so your screens can let fresh air.

Remove loose debris from your screens with a lint roller or a soft-bristled brush. If there is a lot of build up on your screens, use a vinegar mixture and brush to clean them. Once clean, let the screens dry before putting them back in your windows.

4. Take Care of General Interior Maintenance

Take the time to cover the areas around your home that need to be checked, changed, or cleaned once to twice a year. Make them part of your general spring clean and maintenance routine, and ensure they get done each year.

Replace the batteries in your smoke detectors and check to make sure they are all working properly. Replace filters on HVAC equipment, the refrigerator’s water and ice dispenser, the range hood, or bottom of your microwave. Clean out your dryer vent, and make sure it’s free of lint or clogs. Consider taking the time to declutter any storage spaces as well, such as the basement, attic, and closets.

5. Plan Your Home Improvement Projects

Keep an eye out for areas that have been badly damaged or in need of a change as you go. Spring is a great time of year to refresh your interiors and exteriors. Give areas a cosmetic refresh with new decor and paint, or opt for a larger project like a new kitchen. All spring projects enhance your home, so consider tackling one this year.

Make sure to get any repairs done before spring rain or your upcoming summer barbecue. Schedule repairs for your roof, foundation, deck, or other areas that haven’t made it through the winter unscathed. Take care of repairs in a timely way to avoid their growing worse and costing more down the line. Schedule improvements at the same time, and get the most out of your home this spring.
